Courses and Subjects Offered to Virtual Learners

Upon acceptance into the DLP@LHS, all high school students will attend an academic advisement session with his or her high school counselor.  Counselors will work with students to determine whether high school graduation requirements can be met in the DLP@LHS or through a combination of DLP@LHS and courses offered through other BCPS settings.  If the counselor, student, and parents reach the conclusion that the DLP@LHS does not support the student’s graduation plan, the student will be placed in the face-to-face program.

DLP@LHS Resource Class

All students will be assigned the LHS@DLP Lead teacher as their homeroom teacher and as a primary point of contact for the virtual student and his/her parents.  Students will attend a short Resource Class with the DLP Lead Teacher each virtual day.

Academic Content Areas

The LHS@DLP will offer all core academic courses that are required to meet graduation requirements.  Due to staff limitations, Honors and Advanced Placement classes will not be offered through the DLP@LHS.

Students interested in pursuing advanced-level courses or seeking courses not offered in the DLP@LHS may have those courses scheduled through eLearning, Maryland Virtual Learning Opportunities (MVLO), dual enrollment with CCBC, or with a hybrid schedule (some classes virtual and some in-person at Lansdowne), based on availability.  You would work with your counselor to review your options; these decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Resource Class (Special Education)

Special education students may be scheduled with a special education teacher for a separate resource class for additional support.

Foreign Language

The DLP@LHS does not offer foreign language classes at this time.  Students interested taking a foreign language may have those courses scheduled through eLearning, CCBC Dual Enrollment (ECAP), or with a hybrid schedule (some classes virtual and some in-person at Lansdowne).  You would work with your counselor to review your options; these decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Completer Tracks

Career Research and Development Completer:  Students who are fully enrolled in the DLP program will have Career Research and Development as their completer; the DLP@LHS offers the courses needed for this completer.  In the 2023-2024 school year, the following classes will be offered: Intro to CCRD A (0.5 credits), Intro to CCRD B (0.5 credits), and Advanced CCRD (1.0 credit).

Other Completers: If you are interested in exploring/pursuing other completers and also being in the DLP@LHS, speak with your counselor to discuss your options.

Health and Physical Education

The following Health and Physical Education courses are available in the DLP@LHS: Health 9/10 (0.5 credits), Health 11/12 (0.5 credits), and Fitness Foundations.

The Arts

Due to staff limitations, no arts classes will be offered through the DLP@LHS in the 2023-2024 school year.  Students wishing to participate in visual or performing arts classes could consider CCBC Dual Enrollment (ECAP) or a hybrid schedule (some classes virtual and some in-person at Lansdowne).  Students should work with their counselor to review their options; these decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

There are opportunities for students interested in the arts to engage in after-school activities; students would need to make arrangements to get to the building to participate:

  • Theatre: In addition to acting opportunities in our play and musical, each production needs a stage manager, tech crew (building and painting sets, finding props, finding costumes), and backstage crew during the production for scene changes. No prior experience is needed in any of these areas.
  • Visual Arts: Art Club meets after-school twice a week.

Other Graduation Requirements

The following academic elective classes will be offered through the DLP@LHS in the 2023-2024 school year: Foundations of Engineering.

Additional academic electives may be made available based on the needs of high school students registering for the DLP@LHS and available staffing.  Alternatively, students may be able to have a hybrid schedule that allows them to attend some in-person classes.

High School Courses Not Offered Through the DLP@LHS

While the offerings within the DLP@LHS are limited due to staffing, there may be other opportunities for students to participate in classes.  The following are state-approved education options that could supplement the DLP@LHS and help students meet their educational goals:

eLearning: Offered by BCPS’ Office of Educational Opportunities, the eLearning program supports schools by providing high quality learning options for students to access high school courses outside of current school offerings, schedules, and location.  eLearning classes are synchronous (meet with teachers and peers during specific times).

Extended Day Learning: Students access self-paced blended courses in the evenings and/or on Saturday mornings at one or more centers across Baltimore Country.

Maryland Virtual Learning Opportunities (MVLO): Students work independently through learning activities and interact with the teacher, classmates, and instructional materials through online course tools such as email, messaging, telephone, discussions, and webinars.  This program focuses on Advanced Placement (AP) courses and select foreign language courses.

Early College Access Programs (ECAP): BCPS is fortunate to have a relationship with the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) that offers several learning opportunities for BCPS students, including:

  • BCPS Dual Credit Program – BCPS students have the opportunity to earn both high school and college credit.
  • BCPS Tuition Free Program – BCPS students can participate in an enhanced early college access program at no cost.
  • Diploma to Career – BCPS students can graduate with a high school diploma and a Program Certificate from CCBC, providing 21st-century work skills that you can use right away.

Virtual students may find that participation in one of the Early College Access Programs is a good fit for their schedule and allows them to get a head start on post-high school plans while still in high school. Students interested in any ECAP program should reach out to their high school counselor as soon as possible.
