Principal's Message

Greetings Vikings

The second half of the school year is in full swing and June will be here before we know it.  Students have already picked their classes for the 2017-18 school year, but we still maintain our focus on Quarter 3 and 4 in order to finish strong.

Assessments are a critical part of our students’ education and they are requirements for graduation.  In January, the HSA’s are offered again to those students that need to re-test based on their scores from last year.  The 11th graders will take the SAT on April 5th.  May is a busy month, as we prepare for the AP exams.  Those students that are in English 10 and Algebra 1 will be taking the PARCC, and the Biology and American Government students will be taking the HSA’s.

Students in grades 9 and 10 are preparing themselves for the next steps after high school, by engaging in the many opportunities Lansdowne has to offer.  Students have a variety of upper level rigorous courses to select, as well as the different completer programs to serve as their graduation requirement.  We also offer many elective courses that dive into the arts and other academic topics.

This year’s 11th graders are encourage to schedule a co-enrollment class with CCBC or take part in an internship or job opportunity during their senior year.  Our staff and guidance team can help guide you in these decisions.  The SAT and Jr. Prom is fast approaching and soon they will be entering their final year of high school.

The 4th Quarter ends for seniors on May 26th.  This is also the date of the senior prom.  Finals are scheduled the week prior and the Senior May Calendar has been distributed and posted to make sure everyone knows the dates of these important events.  Graduation is on June 2nd at 10 am.  It will be held at UMBC.  Tickets will be distributed during the mandatory rehearsal.

We are extremely proud of our student-athletes. They not only amaze us through their athletic talents but demonstrate VIKING Pride through their sportsmanship. Winter sports are coming to an end and Spring sports are planning for an exciting season.  Students must maintain a GPA of a 2.0 to participate in any sport.  Make sure you turn in your paperwork on time.

Check out what is happening this week by clicking on the “UPCOMING EVENTS” link.  Please help us maintain your child’s academic progress throughout the rest of the school year.  Routinely check your child’s academic status through the BCPSONE account.  I would like to wish everyone a successful school year.

Inspirational Educator of the Month

Congratulations to Katie Landon on being named the November 2016 Inspirational Educator of the Month.

Ms. Landon says she has wanted to become a teacher as long as she can remember.  She loved being at school where she felt safe and had fun learning.  Inspired by many teachers she respected and loved, she knew that teaching was her true vocation.  She demonstrates her passion for education regularly, and she represents a key component in pulling us together as a team.  Teamwork is at the heart of her greatest likes here at Lansdowne High School, citing the way that the Vikings always pull together and are consistently resilient.

Ms. Landon is our STAT teacher here at LHS.  For those unfamiliar with the STAT program, it is an acronym for Students and Teachers Accessing Tomorrow, and is the BCPS initiative to infuse technology into education and to increase student engagement.  Ms. Landon comes to us with experience as an English teacher in Baltimore County.  The STAT teacher position gives her great opportunities to not only interact with our students, but to also help to teach the teachers and help them to design engaging lessons.

Katie hails from Baltimore, and has an educational background with strong ties to the local area.  She earned her Associates Arts degree from the Community College of Baltimore County, her Bachelor of Science degree from Towson University, and her Master of Arts degree from Goucher College, all here in Baltimore County.  She’s even continuing her education at the nearby Notre Dame of Maryland University.

We count ourselves fortunate to have such a talented educator here at LHS.  It is with great Viking Pride that we celebrate this award for Ms. Katie Landon.  Undoubtedly, her husband and children (twin boys and a girl) are also proud of her.  Congratulations!
